Q: Can I use my profession and technical skills as a missionary?

A: Sometimes.

The church needs more Christians who will serve in the professions, business and the trades. Since the work environment provides you with intimate contact with a small cadre of coworkers, you can live out your faith in real life - and no one wants to follow a theoretical God, but a God who is real in all we do.

First of all, get some orientation towards where you want to go - information about the needs and the strengths of the country and the region, about work permits for foreigners, about the work environment of your profession. It may be that much of your experience is irrelevant. How does work get done? What kinds of office politics and bureaucratic red tape drive projects?

I recommend you contact Global Opportunities globalopps.org to learn more. They are a terrific outfit that has experience counseling and placing people in many parts of the world.
